Annual Scholarship Program

Each fall we award scholarships for 1 year of free membership. Below is our first group of winners. The scholarships are open to current and new members. Subscribe to our emails to be notified when we open our next class of scholarships.

Writers Scholarship - Molly Woodward. For the past year and a half, I’ve been working on a project called Welcome to the Club that documents New York City’s niche community groups and social clubs as a way to explore what it means to belong. So far, I’ve photographed and interviewed members at 19 clubs across the five boroughs. This year at Work Heights, I plan to edit down those interviews and write companion essays that dig deeper into the history of each group and share the experiences of its members.

Non-Profit Scholarship - Emma Klock. I work as a fundraiser for Grameen America that is a nonprofit community development financial institution dedicated to helping women who live in poverty build small businesses to create better lives for their families by providing affordable capital, credit-building, asset-building, financial education, and peer support to enable their members to boost their business income, create jobs in their communities and enter the mainstream financial system. They envision an inclusive society in which all entrepreneurs, regardless of gender, race, or income, have access to fair and affordable financial services to support upward economic mobility.

Podcaster Scholarship - Jarrod Fortune. Negro Jump is an anime podcast whose goal is to give the insight and perspective of the everyday Black/BIPOC anime fan. Listeners from around the world have expressed what this podcast has done for their personal lives. So many have reached out with words of appreciation for me and my co-hosts’ commentary on anime. In return, this has motivated us to continue to host/produce this podcast along with other related content.

Side-Hustler Scholarship - Joshua Lavra. I founded Faguette.net – queer goods, supporting queers doing good. The idea for Faguette came during the pandemic and has turned into something real (website, fundraising, collaborations) within the last two years as I've been able to work on it outside of my day job. I'd love to have more artist / creative collaborations with the ultimate goal of raising more $$$ for LGBTQ+ non-profits; so far we've been able to donate over $20k through sales and matching donations and I would love to see this reach $100k+.

Student Scholarship - Shiraz Fazli. My goal is to research and develop methods of using the arts as a tool for educating students about countries involved in historical and contemporary conflicts. I also endeavor to learn teaching methodologies to best serve students in public schools and community-based programs. I'm working as a full-time associate teacher at a school in Brooklyn, where I've put together a curriculum that uses the arts to teach about Afghanistan. Being an Afghan in the US, I've seen a lot of stereotypes about Afghans and Muslims due to the ongoing war. It hit close to home, and that's why I've enjoyed teaching this curriculum so much. In fact, I've decided to take things a step further by pursuing a Master of Arts in Arts Education at Brooklyn College. My aim is to really explore how we can teach students about countries at war in a way that helps them break free from those same old stereotypes I encountered as a kid.
